Prepositions


let's look at how different prepositions are used
we can begin with the preposition 

on

It can indicate the 
place or position 

being on a surface
on the road 
on the table

Example sentences:

The doll is on the table
There is lot of traffic on this road




The  plates and the glasses are on the table



To give the idea

attached 

on the wall
 Example sentences:



 The picture is on the wall.
There is a calendar hanging on the wall.



It can also  indicate  
 time

  on a Day/date

on Monday
on May 1st 
on the 4th of February
on the next day
on the new year’s day

Example sentences:


The school begins on Monday.

My birthday is on May 1st .
We celebrate independence on the 4th of February.

He went to Kandy on the next day to worship the Temple of the tooth.

The children worship their elders on the new year’s day.
When we refer to 
only a part of a day 
we use 
on  

on Saturday morning 
on the evening of August 12th 

 Example sentences:


He usually jogs on Saturday morning.




I'm going to have a party on the evening of August 12th .  
We also say 

on time

This means
 "exactly at the time arranged not before or after”

Example sentences:

The meeting which was to start at five o’clock began on time. 
The train arrived on time.


It indicates 
mode of transport 

on a bicycle 
on horse back
on board of a ship , aircraft,train




Example sentences:

He goes to office on a bicycle. 



 They went hunting on horse back



The passengers were on board of the ship when we arrived.


It is also used with the meaning 
"about" or "concerning"

on environmental pollution
on global crisis of climate 


Example sentences:

He Spoke very much on environmental pollution



He gave a speech on global crisis of climate. 


It can also express the idea

 "for the purpose of "

on clothes
on his son's education 

Example sentences:

She spends lot of money on clothes.


All his earnings were spent on his son's education.



It is also used  in the following situations as well


For a certain side



on the left  

on the right

Example sentence:



The  temple is on the left  of the field. 



The pharmacy is on the right.

It is used 

 for a floor in a house

on the first floor
  
Example sentence:



She lives on the first floor of that apartment.

 For public transport

on the bus 
on a plane
Example sentences:

She comes to school on the school bus.

He travels on a plane to Delhi.


For television ,radio

on TV 
on the radio
Example sentences:

They watched the match on TV. 

He listens to music often on the radio.

The Clown’s Wife by Johnson Agard  Quick overview about the poet Johnson Agard was born in British Guiana (now called Guyana) in the Caribbean, in 1949. He moved to the UK in late 1970 and is well known for powerful and fun performance of his work. He went on to study English, French and Latin at A-level, writing his first poetry when he was in sixth-form, and left school in 1967.
