Subordinating Conjunctions

 


Let’s see what are the Subordinating Conjunctions that we can use to link two or more items.

Read the following paragraph paying attention to the highlighted words.

As soon as the bell rang for the interval Pavan, Kumudu, Samanali and Sepalika ran to the library. They spent in the library reading books until the interval was over. When the interval was over they did not return to the class as they did not hear the bell. Therefore they remained in the library even after the bell had rung. While they were reading a prefect came and told them that the bell had rung .When they finally went to the class the teacher had almost finished the lesson and was very angry. He did not allow them to enter unless they say sorry. The teacher also said that they would permit in provided that they would complete their activities during that day itself. Then they apologized the teacher and promised to complete the activities on that day itself and went in to the class.

The highlighted words above join two clauses together 

Look at the following example again

They spent in the library reading books until the interval was over

Here the two clauses

They spent in the library reading books

 The interval was over

are

 joined together 

using the word

Therefore the highlighted words

They are called

Subordinating Conjunctions 

because these conjunctions are used

 to introduce

        Subordinate or Dependent Clauses 

Therefore

 Subordinating Conjunctions

 join
a clause to another on which it dependent for its complete meaning

 

Following are Subordinate Conjunctions

Look at how they are used in sentences 

After returning home you need to have a bath.

You will be infected with Corona if you go out without a mask.

You will be punished unless you wear a mask.

You need to wash you hands often even though you are not quarantined.

Many people don’t wear masks although it is a must to prevent from Corona.

You have to be at home till the curfew lifted.

The schools will be closed until the government decide to reopen.

You need to wear a mask before you leave home.

You must wash your hand often as it was advised by the doctors.

You can’t stay with your friends or family when you are quarantined.

The government punishes people under the quarantine law because the people 

do not adhere to the quarantine regulations.

   People leave their houses as soon as the curfew is lifted by the government.


You have to maintain distance while you are travelling in the public transportation.

You need to inform the medical authorities when you get any symptoms.

As soon as you get any symptoms you need to go to a hospital where the PCR test is done.

  People try to leave their houses since they are fed up by staying at home.

You have to maintain distance with people while the pandemic is prevailing in the world.

 Many people do not understand properly how they are infected by COVID 19.

 I do not know why many people avoid to heed the regulations.

We must obey the government regulations that we may stay safe.
